POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Academic Director

Remuneration: Competitive salary and benefits package, opportunities for professional growth

Summary: The teachers are the essence of the work of the school and are expected to give the highest possible standard of service to students, parents and the school. Therefore, each teacher is responsible for the quality of education and progress of the students in their class(es). All teachers at St. John’s Academy are required to have a valid BC Teacher’s license and be in good standing. In addition, each teacher has a duty of care to ensure all their students are safe, secure and properly supervised at all times.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • B. Ed required, M.Ed or subject-related graduate degree is preferred
  • Ability to obtain a BC teachers’ license (professional or subject-restricted) is required and must be in process of obtaining this at time of application
  • Strong subject area knowledge gained by post secondary studies
  • Familiarity with BC’s new curriculum
  • Strong ability to use technology effectively and to integrate technology meaningfully into teaching and learning
  • Teaching that uses various modalities and is responsive to student needs
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovating and changing teaching practices in response to best-practices and educational research
  • Commitment to developing 21st-century skills amongst students within the subject area
  • Understanding assessment for learning and the ability to demonstrate its applications by designing differentiated instructional strategies for use with a class and other learning situations
  • Exceptional class management skills/strategies that maintain an effective learning environment and student dignity
  • Willingness to implement school initiatives
  • Ability and willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on developing and implementing learning objectives, academic and core competencies as well as utilizing the local environment to include the outdoors and arts
  • Providing support to colleagues with their professional development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that will be demonstrated regularly with all school community members and with families of learners.

 

Assets

  • Knowledge of a second subject area
  • Experience teaching middle school/secondary students
  • Experience collaboratively planning lesson plans, units of instruction, and interdisciplinary assessments
  • Experience living or working overseas or in another international work environment
  • Experience or training with supporting English Language Learners
  • Understanding and knowledge of IB programmes (experience teaching in the MYP)
  • First Aid
  • A Class 5 Driver’s license; Class 4 Driver’s license may be beneficial

Staff are expected to be modestly dressed as being role models their behaviour is being demonstrated to our students. Staff are to model respectful behaviour amongst one another and with students. Harassment or any form of abuse will not be tolerated and may be subject to disciplinary action. Confidential handling of any and all student and company information is critical. If in doubt, please speak with the Head of School.
