Grade 6/7 are finishing up the unit on Radial Design. Radial balance is any type of balance based on a circle with its design extending from the center. A star, the iris around each pupil of your eyes, a wheel with spokes, and a daisy (among many flowers and other plant forms) are examples of radial balance. Students have been creating their own radial designs using natural objects drawn from observation. Emphasis, balance, symmetry, color contrast, space, and value are the elements and principles that we are examining in this unit.
Grade 8/9 have an exciting opportunity working with the Cowichan Valley Arts Council and participating in the first-ever ‘Under 20’ on-line youth art exhibition. It’s a wonderful opportunity to broaden student’s exposure to the arts and show support for local art. Students are currently developing their designs in their sketchbooks and then creating their final pieces for the online show in June.
Grade 10/11 is working on a unit called Art &Recycling. Recycled art is creative work that’s made from discarded materials that once had another purpose. Artists who make recycled art take those materials and make them into something new. Recycled art can be large or small. It can be two dimensional or three dimensional. There’s no limit to what kinds of materials can be used, empty boxes, bottles, plastic wrap, and other things you throw away. The Grade 10/11 class is repurposing these materials to make art.
